Working toward the development of a strong and diverse national structure that will bring our voice to both Government and non Government agencies across Aotearoa. We want to build a flourishing entity that will live beyond us and contribute in meaningful ways to the lives of our children, grand-children and their children.
We are proud to anchor ourselves in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to walk alongside tangata whenua to undertake this journey of transformation under Article 3; being the promise for Māori and all New Zealanders to thrive in Aotearoa.

Defining our vision and mission for the national strategy, and ultimately the national entity
The vision speaks to the values of Ubuntu, I am because we are… and to build a vision of unity and empowerment. It also speaks to the community in relation to where we are in the context of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and New Zealanders from African origin. The mission speaks to the day-to-day operations and functions of the National African Communities, and how they will achieve this vision.
Prioritising Key Areas of Focus
The purpose of developing the National African Communities Strategy is to stimulate and build momentum around a national strategy to engage, align and unify the African communities in Aotearoa New Zealand, enable stronger national community representation and ultimately build national influence on the issues that matter most.
Our approach is configured around the need to develop the strategy first, then build the structure or entity to deliver the strategy and finally put in place the systems to allow the entity to operate. Our African community comprises several regional representative entities, and the community is a rich tapestry of cultural diversity, intergenerational wisdom, and resilience that offers Aotearoa an abundance of gifts for a successful, thriving, and prosperous nation.
